Toronto World Youth Day 2002 -- A Commentary
Toronto Welt Jugend Tag 2002 -- Ein Kommentar
(German translation in italics)

This is really a misnomer. It should be called "Roman Catholic World Youth Day" because that is exactly what it is.
Dies ist eigentlich eine falsche Bezeichnung.  Es sollte "Römisch Katholischer Welt Jugend Tag" genannt werden, denn das ist genau was es ist.

We are being informed by exalted clerics, highly educated people, professors even, that for Canadians "...the core of your heritage is the spiritual and transcendent vision of life based on Christian revelation."
Wir werden durch erhabene Kleriker, hoch gebildete Leute, sogar Professoren, darüber informiert, daß für Kanadier "...das Herz unseres Erbguts, die geistige und überweltliche Einsicht unseres Lebens, auf christlichen Offenbarungen ruht."

I must be missing something here. The heritage of the original people of this land is the belief in Manitou, or the "Great Spirit." These people lived in harmony with the land, with nature. They did not pollute the air, despoil the forests, or poison the waters. When the uninvited European immigrants arrived (not all of whom were Christians, by the way) they called this land Canada because they needed a name for their latest conquest. The first thing they did was to destroy the native culture and replace it with something foreign to the native people, something they could not possibly understand. In many cases they chased the natives off their lands and into an unfriendly wilderness and even there mercilessly slaughtered them. Can one be proud of such a "Christian heritage"? I am rather ashamed of it.
Irgendetwas muss ich hier vermißt haben.  Das Erbgut der Ureinwohner dieses Landes ist der Glaube an Manitou, oder der "Erhabene Geist".  Diese Menschen lebten im Einklang mit der Natur.  Sie verschmutzten nicht die Luft, plünderten nicht die Wälder, und vergifteten nicht die Gewässer.  Als die uneingeladenen Einwanderer von Europa eintrafen (von denen übrigens nicht alle Christen waren) nannten sie dieses Land Kanada denn sie brauchten einen Namen für ihre neueste Eroberung.  Ihre erste Aktion war das Kulturgut der Eingeborenen zu zerstören und es mit etwas zu ersetzen das den Ureinwohnern völlig fremd und total unverständlich war.  In vielen Fällen vertrieben sie die Ur-Stämme von ihrem Land und jagden sie in eine lebensunfreundliche Wildnis und sogar dort wurden sie oft gnadenlos niedergemetzelt.  Kann jemand of solch ein "Christliches Erbgut" stolz sein?  Eigentlich schäme ich mich darüber.

And then there is the contention that "Christian revelation" (teachings, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ) is the absolute spiritual truth. As is usual with all religions, each one, and in this case the Roman Catholic church, is in possession of the absolute truth. Who was Jesus of Nazareth? There is no mention of him in the annals of the Roman empire. There are no writings by him. There is not the slightest trace of any evidence that he ever existed as a real person. As a matter of fact, nobody even wrote about him until about 100 years after his supposed ascending to heaven. Stands to reason that nobody knew or ever heard of him until some writers found they needed something to prop up and propagandize their new religion and advance it to the status of a world power.
Und dann haben wir diese Behauptung, daß "Christliche Offenbarungen" (die Lehren, der Tod und die  Wiederauferstehung von Jesus Christus) die absolute geistige Wahrheit darstellen.  Wie üblich bei Religionen, in diesem Fall ist es die römisch katholische Kirche, alle sind sie im Besitz der absoluten Wahrheit.  Wer war dieser Jesus von Nazareth?  In den Annalen des römischen Weltreiches ist von ihm nichts erwähnt.  Es gibt keine schriftlichen Überlieferungen von ihm.  Es gibt nicht die geringste Spur eines Beweises davon, daß er je existierte als eine lebende Person.  In der Tat, niemand schrieb etwas über ihn bis nahe an die hundert Jahre nach seiner angeblichen Himmelfahrt.  Da wird es vernünftig anzunehmen, daß niemand etwas von ihm hörte oder wußte bis  einige Schriftsteller beschlossen, daß sie etwas brauchten um für ihre neue Religion Propaganda zu machen und sie zu einer Weltmacht zu avancieren.

During the time when Jesus is supposed to have lived, Zoroastrianism and Mithraism were widely practiced religions in that general area. Their mythologies bear a striking resemblance to the Jesus myth with reports of virgin births, healing the sick, making the dead rise from their graves, and performing various other miracles, including ascending to heaven. It seems logical that they formed the basis for the Jesus myth. Is one really to believe that the "Christian revelation" is the absolute truth? I don’t find it credible at all.
Während der Zeit in der Jesus angeblich lebte waren Zaroastrianismus und Mitraismus weitverbreitete Religionen in den mittelöstlichen Gegenden [des römischen Weltreichs].  Der Mythos jener Religionen hat viele Ähnlichkeiten mit dem Jesus-Mythos wie, zum Beispiel, mit Berichten von unbeflecktem Empfängnis, Heilung der Kranken, Wiedererweckung der Toten von ihren Gräbern und der Vollbringung verschiedener anderer Wunder, einschließlich von Himmelfahrten.  Es scheint logisch, daß diese Ereignisse die Grundlage für den Jesus-Mythos darstellen.  Soll man glauben, daß die "Christlichen Offenbarungen" die absolute Wahrheit darstellen?  Ich finde es keineswegs  glaubhaft.

So what have we learned from this so-called "world youth day"? There was a week of inconvenience for Torontonians, a large cleanup bill, a big party, and a little extra profit for the store owners, but we have learned not much of any use, really.
Nun, was haben wir aus diesem sogenannten "Welt Jugend Tag" gelernt?  Es gab eine Woche von Unannehmlichkeiten für die Bürger von Toronto, eine große Aufräumungsrechnung, eine große Party und etwas Profitaufbesserung für die Geschäftsleute, aber wir haben wirklich nichts gelernt was von Nutzen wäre.
